Installing a garage floor drain is a convenient way of controlling any water that drips off your car and onto the concrete floor. Behind the wall where you can t see a vent line and drainpipe lead to a soil stack which is the control center of the wastewater system. Would this drain go to the sewer. Temporarily run pipe longer than it needs to be so it comes near the old pipe.

The waste vent runs from your main drain line to prevent back pressure in the main sewer line. Branch drain lines run horizontally though with a slight downward slope to connect each of the fixture drain traps to soil stacks which in turn will lead to main drain lines. Keep in mind that the floor will need to be sloped toward the drain to allow water to flow toward it. Branch drains are often completely hidden by the finished wall ceiling and floor surfaces.

I tried pouring a bunch of water down it to see if i could find the exit but could not. Prime and glue two 5 inch pieces of pipe to a tee fitting. Drain pipes take the wastewater to the soil stack. As water drains down the steep slope at the wye it can create a siphon effect such that water will be sucked out of the trap.

If the owner wants to install a trough drain then it must be plumbed and be pre treated ran thru an oil interceptor. A garage drain is also great for rinsing and cleaning the garage floor so all the dirty water doesn t end up on the driveway. Connecting a trap to a vertical drain with a wye fitting and a 45 degree elbow seems like a good idea. This pipe can be interrupted at any point up to 4 feet from the vent shaft that generally exits your home from the roof or the side of the home.

Residential garage drains are prohibited from connecting to the sewer drainage system in our jurisdiction. At these points you can cut and run secondary drain lines into the main shaft. Through the stack sewer gases are carried up to the roof through vent lines. Put on heavy rubber gloves.

Cut out a section of the stack or drain with a reciprocating saw and place the section in a heavy bag as it may have sludge on its interior. I ve never worried about it too much but with some heavy rains recently i discovered it doesn t work. When running pipe across a stud wall you may need to notch cut some of the holes using a reciprocating saw. A drainpipe attached to the p trap goes into an opening in the wall.

A drain line for the washing machine is an obvious must but a floor drain also helps while you are adding drain lines for appliances and fixtures add a floor drain at a central location in the garage floor.
